Online poker has been a hot topic of discussion in the United States as several individual states have already produced bills that are under consideration for the gaming option. Not surprisingly, the state of California is among the small group of states considering legislation. Assemblyman Mike Gatto introduced AB 9 in California, a bill that would legalized online poker within the state, but one that was not particularly cared for in the overall scheme of things. The bill had some issues and apparently, Gatto has announced he will be making changes to the bill as a first set of proposed amendments.
The amended text of AB 9 has yet to be released but Gatto did discuss the changes that were to be made. According to OnlinePokerReport, the bill with changed text will not be available until the revised bill has been referred for a hearing.
The big change of the bill is one in which a requirement was originally intended for registering for an online poker gaming account. In AB 9, players who wanted to take part in online poker would have to go to a facility of a card room or tribal casino and open an account in person. This part of the legislation was a big turnoff for players as the original idea behind online poker is to enjoy the option from home without having to go out to get started.
Gatto stated on this point that after speaking with security experts, professionals in the industry and players themselves, he has decided that online poker is best served by making the in-person registration an option instead of a requirement. Players will have the opportunity to do so if they choose but with the changes, it will no longer be required.
Gatto also mentioned that he is considering other options that would be requirements to help the land based industries with the legalization of online poker gaming. This could include annual tournaments to help bring more players to the brick and mortar casinos and card rooms.
