Event #25 of the World Series of Poker has concluded and it was Brian Meinders who dominated the event, outlasting 365 opponents to earn his first gold bracelet. Meinders was able to earn three table wins to earn $116,118 with the title win.
The event was a $1,500 Limit Hold’em Shootout and Meinders would do well in the tournament, coming back on the third day to face the final nine opponents. The tournament was a relatively small field but those competing were some of the best in the business. However, many were eliminated early including Phil Hellmuth, Maria Ho, Marcel Luske, Barry Shulman and more.
By Day 2, fifty players remained and those players were guaranteed at least $3,088 and ten of these players would return to final table play. The field was slowly narrowed down to just two players, Meinders and Darin Thomas.
When heads up play began, Meinders held a nice chip lead and he would play aggressively. Everyone could tell that Meinders wanted the bracelet and he was playing his hardest to win it. Thomas would not be able to overcome Meinders large chip lead and he would eventually bow out in second play.
The final hand would see Meinders raise on the pre-flop and Thomas would call. The flop would show 8-10-6 and Thomas would check though Meinders was not done betting. Thomas would raise Meinders wager and this caused several raises until both players were all in.
Meinders would show his hand of 5-3 spades and he was going for a flush draw. Thomas held Q-6 for the bottom pair. The 4 of clubs on the turn pushed Meinders for a straight draw and the 7 of spades on the river gave Meinders’ the flush and straight for the win.
