Legislators have finished revisions to a monumental online gambling bill in the state of New Jersey, where it will now be in hands of Governor Chris Christie to sign and make law.
Christie made it abundantly clear a few weeks ago that he would fast-track the bill once certain revisions were made. According to the Washington Post, senators and other assembly members worked to satisfy the Governor’s request, which now includes a 10-year “trial period for online betting,” as well as raising taxes on the online winnings of Atlantic City casinos.
In the past, he had vetoed 2 similar measures, citing his concerns about constitutional violations and the possibility of illegal betting going on within the state.
Senator Raymond Lesniak had this statement to give regarding the new bill:
“Internet gaming will give an immediate boost to the outlook for Atlantic City’s future, preventing the closing of at least one casino, and saving thousands of jobs. Now we can get to work making Atlantic City the Silicon Valley of Internet gaming by being the hub for other states to join.”
The state of New Jersey would be the third state to legalize online gambling, with Nevada and Delaware being the first two. The bill should provide a decent income-boost to the state economy, whose casinos have seen hefty losses in the past 5 years.
The new online gambling law is aimed at encouraging those New Jersey residents who are unable or unwilling to travel to a brick and mortar casino the chance to play in the comfort of their own homes.
