Indiana Governor Continues to Oppose Gambling Expansion

As more states begin to open up to gambling opportunities, be it online or land based, one state may fall further behind. Legislatures in the state of Indiana would like to expand their gambling industry as the current casinos in the state face tough competition in neighboring states. However, the governor of Indiana, Mike Pence, continues to oppose an expansion of gambling for the state.

According to a recent report on Indystar.com, the governor has become more outspoken on his opposition of an expansion. The governor spoke to an audience on March 11th at the Indiana Statehouse Rotunda about education reform and commented on the idea of gambling expansion.

Legislatures have already created a measure which would help Indiana casinos. The officials were pressured by casinos in the state to do something to combat the increased competition from surrounding states. During the meeting, Pence stated the he is opposed to a state-sanctioned gambling expansion and is concerned about certain provisions of the bill. Pence does not like the idea of live table games for the state racinos as well as allowing riverboat casinos to provide operations on land.

The governor’s stance on a gambling expansion is not anything new but his comments at the meeting was the first time Pence actually stated direct concerns about the provisions. The governor stated that the addition of live table games to racinos as well as riverboat casinos moving to land were an expansion of gambling that he does not support for the state.

The governor went on to state that he plans on discussing his opinion with lawmakers and his concerns are shared by Brian Bosma, House Speaker in the state. The new bill, Senate Bill 528, may be in jeopardy and the state could begin to lose revenues as gambling opportunities continue to open up in neighboring states.
