As Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware pave the way for online poker legislation in the United States, several other states are now trying to pass similar legislation. Both Hawaii and Iowa had measures moving forward in the legislative process to only now to fizzle out.
According to a recent report by Pokerfuse‘s senior writer Haley Hintz, both Hawaii and Iowa’s online poker proposals have ceased. Hawaii wanted to see online poker for their residents but a hearing was never set in place by the State House Finance Committee. The measure managed to make it through two committees, the Economic Revitalization & Business Committee as well as the Judiciary Committee only to stop there. The bill did not have the support needed from both democrats and republicans to move forward.
In the state of Iowa, a measure for online poker gained preliminary approval a few weeks ago, only to be shot down in the Senate Subcommittee meeting. The Iowa bill was sponsored by State Senator Jeff Danielson and early reports by Chris Krafcik stated the bill would soon fail. The thought was later confirmed by Matt Eide an Iowa Lobbyist associated with Eide & Heisinger LLC.
Both bills were unable to gain the support they needed to move forward in the legislative process. It will not be surprising if the states continue to try and pass similar legislation, however, the longer the process takes, the further other states will be in the competition for dominance in the industry.
It seems every week or two, a new state has decided to create some form of gambling legislation. Some states do not offer casino gambling at all, so many are way behind and just now starting to offer gambling opportunities.
