All across the United States, legislatures are working to legalize online poker and other forms of online gambling. It seems as though new pieces of legislation are popping up in a new state almost every week and most of the new measures reach some type of opposition, whether it be from other government officials or residents of the state. The state of California is one state that has been busy trying to offer this option and a recent poll shows that their residents are split on the subject.
The USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences/Los Angeles Times poll was conducted by several groups including American Viewpoint and Greenberg Quinlan Rosner. From May 17th to May 21st, over 1,000 registered voters were questioned on the subject of online poker and other online gambling options.
The survey found that about half of those surveyed felt as though online gambling would give young people the wrong impression and they would most likely become addicted to online gambling. Another forty seven percent of those polled stated that they are in favor of online poker legalization only if lawmakers could promise that the option would bring in $200 million each year for the state in areas of education, public safety and other services.
If online poker and other online gambling options were made available in the state, they would only be available to residents of the state and the sites would have to be operated in the state. lawmakers in California as well as other US states continue to work hard to try and see this option available for their residents. The coming months will prove crucial to online gambling. Many of the top online gambling companies are already applying for licensing so they can be the first one’s available once the option is legalized. Hopefully this year will be the time when online poker is finally available in the US.
