Full Tilt Poker ‘Red Pros’ Dwindling, Gowen and Benyamine Railed

November 18, 2008

Perhaps the most well-known aspect of Full Tilt Poker is its consignment with a multitude of today’s top professional poker players, like Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer and Jennifer Harman. Recent actions, however, are dropping those numbers at an alarming rate.

Two cases in point would be the sudden disappearance of French poker pro David Benyamine’s Red Pro status at Full Tilt Poker, and the sudden discharge of long-time Team FTP member, Cycalona Gowen, better known as ‘Clonie’.

In Benyamine’s case (pictured left), there has been no official statement regarding who chose to end his Red Pro status, Full Tilt Poker or Benyamine himself. We do know, however, that David spoke of leaving Team FTP in late 2007. The WSOP Bracelet winner said during a poker table chat, “im done at full tilt”, along with a few other choice statements.

DavidDegenyamine Benyamine can still be found playing online poker at Full Tilt, but without his fashionably red name tag, or the 100% rake-back all members of Team Full Tilt receive.

Clonie Gowen’s case is a bit different. Gowen (pictured left) joined Team Full Tilt Poker back in 2004, signing a contract that granted her 1% of Tiltware LLC (FTP’s parent company) and Full Tilt Poker. Since that time, the stunning celebrity has worn FTP apparel and other marketing paraphernalia to promote the online poker room. However, in 2007, when all Team Full Tilt members received their annual distribution checks, Ms. Gowen’s was not delivered.

In November of that same year, fellow Full Tilt Pro Howard Lederer offered Clonie $250k to commend her performance for Tiltware and Full Tilt Poker. Ms. Gowen refused, stating that $250k was a mere fraction of what was owed her, estimating the company to be worth $4-billion.

Despite her lack of payment, Clonie Gowen continued to play at and promote Full Tilt Poker, that is up until November 11, 2008, when she was informed that her services would no longer be required, and that Full Tilt Poker would be issuing a press release stating the her dismissal from Team FTP.

Last Thursday, Clonie took action by filed a law suit in the Nevada courts. The list of charges against Tiltware, Full Tilt Poker and numerous members of Team Full Tilt Poker include:

1. Breach of Contract
2. Breach of Fiduciary Duties
3. Breach of Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing
4. Intentional Misrepresentation / Fraud
5. Unjust Enrichment

Clonie Gowen is seeking $40 million in the case against Tiltware, et al.

Ex-Fellow members of Team Full Tilt Poker named in the court filing are Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Erick Lindgren, Chris Ferguson and Patrick Antonius.

Online Poker News: US Government Rules To Fully Implement UIGEA

    November 14, 2008

It was a sad day for online poker enthusiasts in the United States as Wednesday, November 12th, the Department of Treasury and Federal Reserve Board announced their final ruling to fully impose the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), introduced in late 2006.

According to the UIGEA, Internet-based gambling sites, including online casinos, online poker rooms and online sportsbooks, are forbidden to consciously accept monetary transfers from US citizens for the purpose of gambling online. Payment methods in question include credit card purchases, electronic transfers and check processing.

US financial institutions who facilitate these types of monetary transaction are charged with the responsibility of establishing and integrating reasonable policies and procedures intended to thwart such funding of illegal online gambling, as per the UIGEA.

The ruling provides financial institutions with non-exclusive examples of policies and procedures that could be implemented while setting out the regulatory framework for enforcement.

The ruling strictly forbids making a monetary wager over the Internet, whether initiated or received within a jurisdiction that is defined as illegal gambling by the UIGEA or any other applicable state or federal law.

Online gambling and financial institutions relative to the UIGEA and the recent ruling have been given until December 1, 2009 to comply.

Full documentation of the order can be found here: Federal Reserve Notice (382kb PDF format).

      About the Prevent Cancer Foundation:

The Prevent Cancer Foundation was started in 1985 when Founder and President Carolyn Aldige first understood the power of prevention to defeat cancer — and recognized that too few of the country’s resources were used to promote cancer prevention research or education. Today, it is one of the nation’s leading health organizations and has catapulted cancer prevention to prominence. Since its inception the Foundation has provided more than $74 million in support of cancer prevention and early detection research and education programs. CRPF peer-reviewed grants have been awarded to more than 250 scientists from more than 150 of the leading academic medical centers nationwide. This research has been pivotal in developing a body of knowledge that is the basis for important cancer prevention and early detection strategies.

      About Bad Beat on Cancer:

Bad Beat on Cancer was started a few years ago by Rafe Furst and Phil Gordon to help fund cancer research and prevention – by playing poker. They ask professionals and amateurs alike to donate 1% of whatever they win at the WSOP. They’ve been extraordinarily successful over the last few years, raising over $1 million for a very worthy cause. It’s a very fiscally responsible organization, nearly 86 cents from every dollar goes to the cancer research programs that they’re funding. It’s a great organization and they have most of the world’s greatest players signed up.

Peter Eastgate Becomes Youngest To Win World Series of Poker Main Event

        November 12, 2008

The Penn & Teller Theater of the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino was the place to be Tuesday as Peter Eastgate (pictured left) and Ivan Demidov took their seats around the felt, battling it out in heads-up to determine who would be the $9.15 million 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion.

After eliminating the rest of the November Nine, most of which was the handy-work of 22-year-old Dane Peter Eastgate, it came down to these two exceptionally skilled, foreign born competitors.

Ivan Demidov (pictured left) of Moscow, Russia went into heads-up and quickly regained the chip lead, but it wasn’t long before Eastgate scooped most of the chips back into his favor. After 103 hands, with an astounding chip lead of about 121-million to Demidov’s 16-million, the final hand came down – hand #104.

The Denmark native, with a chanting crowd of Danish supporters behind him, limped in from the button. Demidov, on the Big Blind, checked. Ks-3h-2d came on the flop. Demidov checked again to Eastgate, who raised 1.25 million. A quick call from Demidov brought the Turn, 4c.

At this point, both players thought they had clenched the hand, invoking a check-raise attempt from Demidov. First came the check, then a 2 million reply from Eastgate, followed by Demidov’s check-raise of 4 million. Eastgate played it cool, calling when the 7s fell on the river. Demidov fell for it, pushing all-in, and without a moment’s hesitation, Eastgate called. The trap was set.

Demidov flipped 4h-2h for Two Pair, while Eastgate turned over Ad-5s for the Wheel Straight.

Dane Peter Eastgate, a 22-year-old college dropout, disposed of Phil Hellmuth’s previous record to take over the history books as the WSOP Main Event’s Youngest Champion. Hellmuth had previously claimed that title at the age of 24.

Doubtless this World Series of Poker Championship will be the topic of many a conversation for quite some time to come. Peter Eastgate is neither a mathematical scholar nor an acclaimed professional poker player. He learned the game of Texas Hold’em only two years ago from his high school friends. Eastgate entered college for merely a week before deciding his poker skills could get him farther than a college education. He dropped out and turned to a full-time career as a poker player.

2008 WSOP Main Event Final Table Results

        1st - Peter Eastgate (Denmark) - $9,152,416
        2nd - Ivan Demidov (Russia) - $5,790,024
        3rd - Dennis Phillips (USA) - $4,503,352
        4th - Ylon Schwartz (USA) - $3,763,515
        5th - Scott Montgomery (Canada) - $3,088,012
        6th - Darus Suharto (Canada) - $2,412,510
        7th - David Rheem (USA) - $1,769,174
        8th - Kelly Kim (USA) - $1,286,672
        9th - Craig Marquis (USA) - $900,670
