Police in Nitro are currently working on obtaining a battery warrant for a 61 year old man from Cross Lanes that is accused of choking a card dealer at the Tri State Racetrack and Gaming Center. Lt. Joe Savilla said that the man became enraged shortly after midnight when the dealer advised him he couldn’t give another man his winnings at the table.

After he was told that he allegedly walked around the table and then grabbed hold of the card dealer around the neck, according to Savilla. You might expect to hear a dealer getting assaulted because a player lost a big hand but to assault someone because you have to step away from the table for a minute?

So apparently after the man allegedly assaulted the dealer a floor boss came over an immediately separated the two and security at the track detained the suspect until Nitro officers arrived. They had to let the suspect go however after they questioned him and he was identified because the crime didn’t occur in the presence of law enforcement.

Police haven’t released the names of the alleged victim or the suspect at the time but Lt. Savilla has described the victim as being a 44 year old man from Chesapeake, Ohio. He also said that this incident is the first violent one officers can recall happening at the track.

The main reason for this is there is great quality surveillance equipment all around the track and gaming center and it usually deters people from such behavior but apparently not one player who’s bad behavior was captured on their surveillance. “If you commit a crime at that dog track, their video equipment is going to catch you,” Savilla said.

Now police in Nitro are waiting for a magistrate from Kanawha County to sign off on an arrest warrant and that could happen as soon as tonight, Savilla said.

It’s Friday, September 5, and that means only one thing in the world of online poker – the PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) kicks off today.

The first round of the 33-event series is a No Limit Hold’em 6-Max tournament with a $1,000,000 guaranteed prize pool, scheduled to begin at 2:30pm ET. Then, at 4:30pm ET, Event #2 commences – a Pot Limit 5 Card Draw tournament guaranteeing $200,000. Each of these events incurs a buy-in of $215.

The opening day of the PokerStars WCOOP marks the beginning of 18 full days of non-stop action, culminating into the WCOOP Main Event on September 22nd. Each day, PokerStars will host two WCOOP Events, except for September 21st, just before the grandeur of the Main Event.

PokerStars always goes above and beyond the median of major online poker events, and this year’s WCOOP is no different. The online poker room is guaranteeing an awesome $30,000,000 over all 33 events, and the WCOOP Main Event is truly worthy of gawking at as PokerStars is guaranteeing $10,000,000 in the WCOOP Main Event alone.

Several new events have been introduced to the tournament series this year, including two “High Roller” events. The first will take place tomorrow, September 7th, with a $10,300 buy-in and a guaranteed prize pool of $2,000,000. Then, on September 14th, a $25,000 buy-in grants players a seat in the Heads-Up event worth $1,600,000 GTD.

As implausible as it may seem, this year’s WCOOP Main Event will actually be worth about 1/6th of what the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event pays out. That is truly an awe inspiring element of PokerStars, and is practically guaranteed to attract a multitude of today’s top professional poker players.

Thinking back to the inaugural 2002 PokerStars World Championship of online poker, the main event was worth a purse of $238,000. How does that jump to $10-million over six years? I don’t know – but I like it!

Californians who have been anxiously awaiting the result of Assemblyman Lloyd Levine’s online poker bill, AB 2026, will have to wait a little longer now. The bill was put on the shelf for the remainder of the year, scheduled to be reintroduced to the Senate Appropriations Committee in January of 2009.

Originally introduced in February of 2008 as a bill to study the potential of legalizing online poker in California, AB 2026 was then revised to actually legalize the act of playing online poker in California, rather than studying the issue. However, the last time AB 2026 went to the committee, it was merely revised again, back to its original ‘study of online poker’ terminology.

There was no statement given as to why Levine’s AB 2026 was put on the back burner until 2009, but an overload of other political matters to attend to is the suspected reason.

Jim Tabilio, president of Poker Voters of America, is the citizen sponsor of AB 2026 and was actually responsible for calling a hold on the bill. Last month, Tabilio was very pleased with the committee’s approval of the bill. “It’s a good sign that the legislators are taking this issue seriously, understand the importance of the bill and are asking the right questions. The plan going forward is to bring together the potential stakeholders to help craft a final version of the bill that protects Californians who play online and maximizes revenue for the state.”

There are an estimated 2 million online poker players residing in California, and the state has been right at the forefront with efforts to legalize the activity for its many supporting citizens. Anthony “Tuff Fish” Sandstrom lead a campaign in 2007 to establish a state-run online poker room. He received more than enough signatures on his petition to see it go to a public vote on the February 2008 ballot, butpersonally withdrew the initiative before the time came.

Jamiel Alexander “Jimmy” Chagra, notorious drug runner, fanciful poker player and suspect in a 1979 federal judge assassination, has lost his battle with cancer. Battling the disease since November, Jimmy’s sister Patsy Chagra said he passed away on Friday, August 19, 2008. He was 63 years old.

Jimmy Chagra led a tarnished existence, a known drug runner throughout most of his life. Much of the money he acquired from his unsavory dealings was lost at the poker tables in Las Vegas. A recreational gambler with a flair for the more expensive tables, Chagra lost uncountable amounts to professional poker players like Doyle Brunson and the late Chip Reese.

In 1978, Chagra was accused of leading an assassination attempt on against Assistant US Attorney James Kerr. Jimmy plead guilty to the charges and was sentences to life behind bars by federal judge John Wood Jr., known as “Maximum John” for his harsh penalization of known drug felons.

Chagra then masterminded another assassination attempt, this time on Judge Wood, who was shot and killed May 29, 1978. Chagra’s third wife, Elizabeth, was convicted for conveying the $250,000 to the hit-man hired to shoot the US District Judge. The hit-man in the case was Charles Harrelson, father of esteemed actor Woody Harrelson.

Three months later, Chagra’s sentence was handed down for disrupting the investigation of Wood’s murder, though the conspiracy charges had been dropped. He then spent 6 months on the run from authorities before being captured by the Drug Enforcement Administration in February of 1980.

Chagra was sentenced to 30 years in prison for instigating an international drug-smuggling scheme, but due to health issues, was released in 2003. According to a report from the El Paso Times, Jimmy Chagra was believed to have been placed in the Federal Witness Protection Program.

An El Paso reporter stated that he had been trying to write a book about Jamiel Alexander “Jimmy” Chagra, but halted the work when his subject failed to cooperate. The reporter says Chagra was living by the alias “James Madrid”, residing in a trailer camp in Mesa, Arizona.

online poker Press Release: (London, UK) - Dublin has been awarded the title of European Poker Capital 2008 by Bluff Europe Magazine. The Irish capital piped last year’s winner, London, to the post — with Vienna, Amsterdam and Barcelona named third, fourth and fifth places respectively. Bluff Europe praised Dublin’s lively and friendly poker scene, as well as the wealth of poker clubs and tournaments available to the poker playing public.

Dublin has a fine selection of card rooms and, poker is also growing steadily on a grassroots level in the city through poker societies and pub poker leagues. Each year exciting new tournaments spring up with buy-ins to suit all pockets. Dublin is also home to the Irish Open, the oldest and most revered tournament in Europe.

Last year’s contest saw Dublin come in a respectable second to London but this year the Irish capital was the city that most impressed the Bluff Europe panel. “Last year, in recognition of the inaugural WSOPE and the general health of its burgeoning poker scene, we chose London as the place to be. This induced a lot of snickering from across the Irish Sea, where they’re rightfully very protective of their fantastic poker scene,” said Philip Conneller, Editor of Bluff Europe. “But this year there was really only one candidate.”

“Gentleman” Liam Flood, who has been a stalwart of Irish poker since he helped introduce Hold’em to the Emerald Isle in the Seventies, was delighted with the news. “It’s because of the craic,” he explained, when asked him to describe what he felt was special about poker in Dublin. “There’s a sense of community. We find that a few drinks after the game helps you relax, too.”

All data compiled by editors at Bluff Europe - Europe’s leading poker magazine.
