Six Month Delay on UIGEA
November 30, 2009
It was recently announced that the UIGEA will be delayed for six months. The news came out just last week that the rules enforcing the implementation the UIGEA will be delayed for six months. This is excellent news for poker players.
If the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act had gone into effect then all American financial institutions would have been forced to cease the processing of transactions related to internet gambling.
This past Friday the US Department of Treasure and Federal Reserve Board announced that the final date for the UIGEA to be implemented was June 1, 2010. The delay was unexpected but much appreciated. The six month delay will give the US House of Representatives Financial Services Committee time to hold hearings on legislation that could help online gambling in the United States.
HR 2266 is up for debate which would delay the UIGEA for another six months and the HR2267 bill would regulate and license online gambling in the United States. The PPA, the Poker Players Alliance, has commented that the delay could be the first step to legal and regulated online poker in the United States.
'This is a great victory for poker but an even greater victory for advocates of good and fair public policy,' said Alfonse D'Amato, Chairman for the PPA. 'These additional months are critical to provide legislators time to clarify UIGEA and pass legislation to license and regulate poker early next year.”
Isildur1 Dominates Antonius, is Dominated by Ziigmund
November 27, 2009
Isildur1's presence was well known on Full Tilt Poker last night, as many online poker fans bellied up to the computer to watch him play, as though they were watching poker on tv. The chat rooms filled with turkey talk as players discussed how they prepared their Thanksgiving Feasts, and which player at which table they preferred.
There were also the usual poker panhandlers, the player bashers, and of course the chat monitor testers.
The nights action kicked off as Durrrr, Howisitfeellike and trex313 sat down to a game of $300/$600 Pot Limit Omaha, isildur1 cleaned up there, to the tune of about 392k and then moved on to a heads up $500/$1000 Heads Up PLO game with Tom "Durrrr" Dwan. Durrrr took a beating over the 892 hands the duo played, and in the end, he paid Isildur1 off to the tune of $665,000+.
That wasn't the end of the action for Isildur1 however, the could-be Swede that Tony G introduced as Patrik Blum (Blum90) on his blog. Patrik Antonious sat down at several heads up tables with Isildur, who slapped Patrik around for the better part of the night. The action included a pot that exceeded 500k! Isildur1 left the match with somewhere between 1.2 and 1.6 million of Antonius' bankroll. Up about 2.5 million total for the evening.
Isildur1 didn't call it a night there though. He sat down to a session with Ziigmund, also known in real life as Saha Mies. Saha turned the tables on Isildur1, whipping him to the tune of $1.4 million.

Isildur1 Back Over 1 Million – Courtesy of Patrik Antonious
November 25, 2009
Ilsidur1 has been the talk of many online poker forums over the course of the few weeks. A high stakes poker player that popped in out of nowhere, and has been cleaning up at the tables since he appeared. In fact, the general consensus is that isildur1 amassed more than 4 million dollars in a few days, and then turned right back around and lost it.
Some say he's good, gutsy and an edgy poker player that knows how to give action to get it. Other's say the could be Swede is a loose calling station that consistently gets lucky hand after hand, a luckbox if you will. Night after night however, one thing stays the same. isildur1 spends hour after after splashing chips around in the nosebleeds, and hundreds of online poker players are logging into Full Tilt Poker night after night to watch.
Last night, Isildur1 relived Patrik Antionius of about $700k in chips during the session. At one point, he was up as high as $1.7 Million. Antonius brought it back some toward the end, recouping some of his losses.
It's clear at this point that for the moment at least, Isildur1 has Tilt's newest member of Team Full Tilt, Tom "Durrrr" Dwan dominated at the Pot Limit Omaha tables, however, as of late, we've seen him take some serious losses at the PLO table.
Another largely discussed topic is this: Antonious told Isildur1 that he would play against him at a No Limit table later, after PLO, then later reneged, much as though he'd never said as much in the FTP chat box in the first place. Some say Antonious would be stupid to give up his edge and play NL with Isildur, other's say that sticking to his game of choice makes Antonious a nit, and others are just disgusted with Antonious going back on his word here.
Poker Player arrested after winning BC Poker Championships
November 25, 2009
The 2009 BC Poker Championships were held in British Columbia, Canada just a few days ago and it was Sophon Sek bested the close to 800 player field to take down the $364,000 first place prize. In a surprising turn of events Sek was arrested just twenty four hours after winning the tournament for his part in a six person murder.
Sek was arrested the next day for his part in the Surrey Six slayings. Sek was charged with manslaughter in connection with the slayings, which was when six victims were murdered including two innocent bystanders. The killings took place back in 2007 and Sek is the sixth person to be arrested in the killings.
Sek has ties with the Canadian gang known as the Red Scorpions. The gang is based in British Colombia and can be identified by the RS tattoos on their necks and arms. The gang originally formed in a young offender’s facility and they have been running a major drug trafficking operations in Vancouver since 2000.
The gang has been connected to many shootings in the area including the six people who were killed in the Whalley condominium in 2007. It has been alleged that Sek gave the killers access to the Balmoral Tower but it is not clear if he knew the plans of those he allegedly let into the building.
Howard Blank the Vice president of the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation commented on Sek’s arrest. He stated: “The RCMP has informed us it is the same person who won our tournament and the RCMP has requested that the funds be held for his winnings. So the funds have not been issued to the winner.”
Sek did not return the next day to claim his winner’s check so Blank found out at that point from police that Sek had been arrested for his part in the crime.
Brian Barboza moves forward in PokerStars Million Dollar Challenge
November 24, 2009
PokerStars Million Dollar Challenge has been on a break for the past few weeks but the show came back to the FOX network this past weekend. Two players were competing to return in December to play against Daniel Negreanu for $1,000,000. One contestant, Brian Barboza, was able to win $100,000 and will return in December to compete for the top prize.
Brian was able to get past Jayde Nicole and then had to face Vanessa Rousso. Brian found facing off against Vanessa was very tough. He commented: “Playing Vanessa was very intimidating. She’s a world class player. I always remember my hands, but I couldn’t tell you what I had in half of the hands I played against her.”
Brian was able to get a straight on the river when he was up against Vanessa and this was enough to win $25,000. Brian then decided to try for the next prize. he stated that he didn’t come to LA to win $25,000 he said he came for the Million.
Brian then had to face Negreanu. He knew it would e tough but he was going to try his best. Brian commented: “Honestly, I had to put Daniel’s advice in the earlier rounds out the window and play my game. I knew luck was going to become involved. So, once I had anything decent, I had to ride the wave.”
Brian was able to take down a few hands to win the $100,000. Now in just a few weeks Brian will return to compete for an additional $100,000 and the chance to play Negreanu for $1 million. Brian will play against the other $100,000 winners and the overall winner will face Negreanu for the top prize.
Amer Sulaiman Wins PokerStars LAPT Playa Conchal Event
November 23, 2009
The PokerStars Latin American Poker Tour Playa Conchal event took place this past weekend and a field of 259 players was competing. In the end it was Canadian coffee merchant Amer Sulaiman who earned the first place win.
Heads up play lasted until the early morning hours on Monday between Sulaiman and Sol Bergren. The final table saw five Canadians competing alongside one Dutch player, a Costa Rican player and one Guatemalan. Bergren entered final table play as the chip leader and held on to make it to heads up play.
Bergren held 1.3 million chips when final table play began and after busting three players his lead would grow even further. Sulaiman busted two players and managed to grow his stack as well. Once heads up play began Bergren held 2.8 million and Sulaiman held 2.2 million.
When heads up play began Sulaiman played quite well and overtook Bergren for the lead rather quickly. It would take several hours before the final hand would occur. Sulaiman went all in with top pair and top kicker while Bergren would call with top pair and a combo flush and straight draw. Bergren missed on the remaining cards and Sulaiman would earn the title win.

Isildur1 Wounded by Poison Ivey
November 20, 2009
You've probably seen his name all over the Internet this last week, Isildur1 has been tearing up the felt, and scooping up some high stakes pots. Until the Lord of the Rings Warrior got ahold of what might have been some poison Ivey last night. You might remember Isildur1 from a story involving durrrr, Tom durrrr Dwan, that took place right after durrrr signed with Full Tilt Poker. Isildur1 Took the poker pro to task, and to the bank, where he robbed him of more than $3million dollars.
He also got tangled up in a little Ivey early on, passing the world renound Phil Ivey $900 k of his poker profits. Well Isildur1 was seen at the high stakes poker tables with Ivey again last night, and this time, Ivey left a mark. Both of these players took their seats and began with $500/$1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha and No-Limit Hold'em.

They played for less than an hour, Ivey was up by 100 grand or so before taking a break. A couple minutes after they returned from break Ivey dug into Isildur1, scooping up a $354,000.00 pot (You could buy a house with that.).
During the rest of what would be a three hour long sessions Ivey peeled another 1.1 million dollars from Isildur1

Poker Pro Faces Extradition to UK over Wife’s Murder
November 20, 2009
You just never know who you might be sitting across from at the poker table. A point I try to bring home to friends and family constantly. A poker table can be a wonderful place to network, meet new business aquaintences, find a lawyer, get a job, hire the new guy, and meet a murderer.
That's right.
Marcus Bebb-Jones, a 46 year old pro poker player that apparently used to own a hotel in Grand Junction Colorado. He and his wife Sabrina Bebb-Jones were partners in the business.
That was until 1997 when employee's of the hotel reported Sabrina Bebb-Jones missing. Police questioned Marcus Bebb-Jones and he did .. tried to kill himself.
There were no charges filed against Marcus at that time, there was also no body found.
According to poker news reports from Compatible Poker, Bebb-Jones then returned to the UK with his three year old son. He started over again without the childs mother, and began his career as a poker tournament player.
While Mr. Bebb-Jones was playing it up on the British Poker Circuit, including a huge cash in 2007 where the could be murderer raked in 90 thousand pounds for a first place win, not much was being done for his wife. Her skull was found in 2004 by some hikers, yet no arrest warrent was issued.
Until now. Mr Marcus Bebb Jones was taken into custody after being arrested at his mothers house. A judge will decide if Bebb-Jones is eleigible to be extradited back to the United Sates.

1100 Online Poker Players Contact Congress Via PPA’s ‘Tweet for Poker’ Campaign
November 19, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC. (November 19, 2009) –The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the leading poker grassroots advocacy group with more than one million members nationwide, today announced Tweet for Poker, an internet advocacy tool that allows poker enthusiasts and activists to directly contact their member of Congress and tell them to support pending legislation that will license and regulate online poker.
“Poker players are online, they’re active, and they’re weighing in on the policy battles that impact their right to play,” said PPA Executive Director John Pappas. “Tweet for poker is PPA’s most instant and dynamic tool for our members to directly contact their legislators in a way that engages the public in the debate. We’re proud of the instant success, and look forward to hearing what our elected officials think of the legislation and this new advocacy program.”
PPA’s Tweet for Poker site allows Twitter users to directly target their member of Congress through a unique platform that matches their account with that of their elected official. Senators are asked to support legislation introduced by Senator Robert Menendez - S.1597, while House members are urged to support H.R. 2267 introduced by Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank. Participants simply enter the information – zip code for Senate, mailing address for House - and PPA redirects them to their Twitter account with their legislator’s information and the message pre-filled. By visiting the site, viewers can follow who is contacting their member of Congress and from what location.
Earlier this year, PPA implemented other online programs to engage poker players and encourage them to contact policymakers to protect their game. During National Poker Week, PPA collected more than 375,000 signatures on the petition to President Obama calling for the licensing and regulation of online poker, and nearly 200,000 letters/emails were sent to U.S Representatives and Senators.
Patrik Antonius Takes Down Record Breaking Poker Pot
November 18, 2009
Full Tilt Poker’s high stakes tables are always busy with poker pros competing for large sums of money. Last night mystery player, Isildur1, and Patrick Antonius got together to play at the high stakes tables and despite huge earlier losses to Isildur1, Antonius went up against the mystery pro and managed to earn the largest online poker pot ever won in the history of online poker.
In the end, Antonius managed to earn $2.4 million from Isildur1 after hours of online poker play. The large amount was won after nine hours of play and over 2,000 hands. Antonius now can add the $2.4 million to the millions he has earned this year.
A few days ago Isildur, who is believed to be Swedish player Viktor Blom, played against Antonius and did well but once they hit the $500/$1,000 pot limit Omaha tables last night it would be a different story. During that session, there were at least five pots worth over$500,000 each and six more over $400,000. Antonius scored another large pot that night of just over $878,000 which was the largest pot ever won online.
After the PLO tables, both pros decided to hit the No Limit Hold’em tables and Antonius continued to dominate. This time Antonius earned $275,000 at the high stakes poker tables. As of right now Antonius has earned over $7.3 million in total profit this year and Isildur1 has earned around $3 million.
Another Man Wins Ladies Poker Tournament
November 17, 2009
The World Series of Poker circuit stopped at Harvey’s Lake Tahoe hotel and casino in Nevada to host poker tournaments and one in particular was the Ladies Poker Championship. The tournament was for ladies to compete in but twenty two year old student Greg Sessler entered the tournament and took down the win with a pair of Queens.
This is the second time a male poker player has entered a ladies poker tournament and won in the past few months. One wonders how a male can win a women’s event, well the World Series of Poker stated their thoughts on the subject in a recent press release. It stated:
“The WSOP isn't a political organization and can't be expected to get involved in debates about sexism, discrimination, or other polarizing issues which may be applicable to poker tournaments. While the WSOP makes a sincere effort to promote women in poker and offers quasi-exclusive tournaments designed to increase female participation in the game, officials generally do not turn away those who want to play in the event, based solely on gender."
So the ladies tournament had ninety six players competing which included four males. The buy-in for the event was $300 and Sessler was the only male to finish in the money, which went to the top nine players. Sessler commented in a WSOP press release why he decided to enter the ladies tournament.
HE stated: “me playing in this tournament really had nothing to do with taking advantage of the ladies or thinking it was a softer field. If Jennifer Harmon would have come and played in the ladies event, she would have been much tougher competition than me. I came here because I only had one day, and really like the structures and the payout (of the women’s event). This was the only tournament I could play.”
Final Payouts for the event:
- Greg Sessler (Danville, California) – $9,932
Mimi Kalem (Cameron Park, California) – $5,308
Corinn Ignatieff (Templeton, California) – $3,715
Candy Alexander (Cameron Park, California) – $2,626
Linda Peverini (Clovis, California) – $2,100
Tera Brown (Austin, Texas) – $1,592
Persia Bonella (Castro Valley, California) – $1,229
Rebecca Burnside (San Francisco, California) – $894
Rose Erhart (Ione, California) – $629
Jeffrey Pollack Resigns as Commissioner of WSOP
November 16, 2009
This past Friday the 13th Jeffrey Pollack the Commissioner of the WSOP announced on his Twitter account that it was his last day. just a few short days after the 40th World Series of Poker ended Pollack left his position.
Pollack has been with the WSOP since 2005 after he left NASCAR and the NBA. Pollack moved to the Commissioner job in 2006 and continued to hold the post until he announced his resignation via Twitter this past Friday.
Pollack stated on his Twitter account: “it’s true…Today is my last day as your #WSOP Commissioner…Thank you for allowing me to be part of the #WSOP these last few years. I will always be a fan and friend to the poker community…”
Pollack also commented in the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He stated: “It’s been a very good run, and I’m proud of the growth that the tournament, and poker, for that matter, have experienced. I came into this role with a certain set of objectives, and now there’s a sense of accomplishment of how the World Series of Poker has expanded.”
In his few years at the WSOP Pollack has helped make the WSOP a worldwide brand. Pollack helped bring in major advertisers to the WSOP such as the Miller Brewing Company and Betfair. Pollack also began the Players Advisory Council to help improve the tournament series as well as establishing the Poker Hall of Fame. Pollack has been a major force in the poker industry in many ways over the past few years. As of right now there has been no word on who will be replacing Pollack as the WSOP Commissioner.
Over 2.1 Million Viewers Tune In to 2009 WSOP Finale
November 12, 2009
Over 2.1 million viewers tuned in to the 2009 World Series of Poker finale to witness Joe Cada of Michigan set the record as the youngest champion ever. Cada is just twenty one years of age and winning the 2009 WSOP Main Event made him the newest young player to capture the title since Peter Eastgate did it last year at the age of 22.
The millions of viewers tuned in to ESPN’s same-day coverage of the World Series of Poker which took place on Tuesday November 10th. Even though millions were tuning in, it was still a decrease in ratings from last year’s WSOP finale. The broadcast earned a 1.8 household coverage rating in an average of 1,806,113 households. Last year’s ratings were 1.9 compared to the 1.8 of this year.
