Titan Poker Ups the Ante for Monthly Guarantees

April 28, 2008

Titan Poker has been slowly increasing their monthly online poker tournament guarantees and now have offer a total of $16 million a month in guarantees. The poker website has stated that the amount of players signing up for the promotions and tournaments has continued to rise and this has caused the giant growth in the guaranteed prize pools.

Titan Poker offers players a $100,000 guaranteed R/A $50 + $5 tournament as well as a $250,000 guaranteed freezeout with $200 + $15 buy-in. The site also has a $50,000 guaranteed freezeout with $100 + $9 buy-in. These are the larger guaranteed tournaments. To play for a smaller buy-in, players can take advantage of the $2+20 cents, or $1+10cent buy-in tournaments. These do have smaller guaranteed prize pools but will help a player build a bankroll since they take place on a daily basis.

Titan Poker was producing guarantees as less than $8 million a month around five months ago, which is less than half of what the site is producing now. Titan Poker attributes the amount of chances to play and bigger prizes up for grabs as the source of their new success.

And not only do players have the chance to win big cash prizes, they can also win a seat to one of their favorite live tournaments. Titan Poker is constantly giving away prizes which include seats to the major tournaments around the world. Players can take this opportunity to build their bankroll with the guaranteed tournaments and maybe win a seat to the next hot tournament.

Poker Players Alliance to Pass Million Member Mark this Week

April 27, 2008

Poker Players Alliance

The Poker Players Alliance has been in full force, working to reach their goal of legalization of online poker. The group has been working toward this goal with the hope that online poker will become legal or at least see an exception to the current laws. This week the group is expected to announce that they have reached the one million member mark. The group is based in Washington DC and is a pro-online poker group.

With the announcement the group will also be releasing the information of their new political action committee and a voter registration drive as well. The Poker Player’s Alliance has a campaign titled “If You Play, Have a Say campaign.” The group has invested largely in lobbying on Capitol Hill.

The PPA signed thousands of new members when the UIGEA bill was passed and since then membership has continued to climb. The PPA is hoping to raise at least $250,000 to fund the new political action committee this year. During this year’s WSOP the PPA will have representatives at the event that will be able to give information about the group, sign people up as members and also register voters for the upcoming presidential election. People will also be able to email members of Congress from the WSOP event by using computer terminals the PPA will have available.

Hopefully the movement will continue and the PPA will be able to gain more members this year and provide a driving force at this year’s most important election. Not only for online poker rights but also many major factors that are on the line with this year’s election.

Poker At School

April 27, 2008

Campus recreations recently held the first Texas Hold’em Poker tournament on January 31st to encourage student participation in campus events. The event holders were predicting to have between 40 to 50 players but fell quite short of the mark. As the tournament started only half of the tables were filled.

With only 24 active players that participated in the event, the total turn out definitely fell short of what organizers had hoped for, but their hopes for successful tournaments are still high as there are many poker fans on campus who will help spread the word around and fill seats at future tournaments.

Since the events are held on campus busy students can still study for their classes and complete hours of homework and still have the chance to play a game they enjoy. One happy Texas Hold’em player in particular had this to say “”I’ve played poker ever since I was little and I haven’t been able to play as much as I used to”.

Out of the 24 players in attendance 18 walked away with prizes that ranged from Applebee’s gift card to NKU sweatshirts, first place winner Sean Blahnik won a 500 piece poker set, but all that played in the tournament got free pizza and some that had never played Texas Hold’em are going to come back and not for the free dinner!

Poker Movie Deal Releases this Friday

April 27, 2008

This Friday poker enthusiasts will get to see a new movie about poker that has already received rave reviews. The movie is based on an ex-gambler who teaches a college kid about playing cards. The two find themselves in the WSOP and the kid proves to be a match for the teacher. The movie stars Burt Reynolds, new comer Bret Harrison and Shannon Elizabeth.

Burt Reynolds is always a sight to see and Shannon Elizabeth will be making a more than anticipated comeback in her role. Bret Harrison has been in popular TV Shows playing the goofy next door neighbor in Grounded for Life and the devils clean-up guy in Reaper (one of my personal favorites). The movie also features several cameos by professional poker players Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, Vince Van Patten, Phil Laak, Joe Hacehm and Antonio Esfandiari.

This will be the second movie released this year in the gambling genre. This past March the movie 21 was released and has grossed over $40 million in the short time it has been out in theatres. With moderate to good reviews this movie has done quite well. 21 was based on the true story of young college students from M.I.T. and how they went to Vegas and won big by counting cards. With the success of this movie and the big name actors and professional card players featured in Deal, poker players and movie lovers alike should enjoy the film. The film will be released to limited cities so movie goers should check with their local theatres for show times and dates.

Special Freeroll Tournament; Take On Champion Annette Obrestad

April 27, 2008

The Internet home of leading European poker magazine, BluffEurope.com, has announced its intentions to host a special freeroll competition that would see two of today’s top poker pros competing against any online poker player who is up to the challenge. On May 20, 2008, Annette Obrestad (‘Annette_15’) and Sorel Mizzi (‘Imper1um’) will put their skills to the test against the world.

Betfair.com has assisted in organizing the event and, as a sponsor of the special freeroll tournament, has added $1,500 to the prize pool. Both Annette Obrestad and Sorel Mizzi will be carrying a $250 bounty on their heads, awarded to any player who manages to send them to the rails. That brings the total prize pool up to $2,000.

Poker players who would like to take part in this extraordinary event can do so by registering at BluffEurope.com (registration link), using the code “BLUFF”. Once registered with the event’s sponsor, Betfair Poker, players will need to earn 10 Betfair Poker Points (equivalent to $1 rake). The player will then be qualified to participate, and pre-registered for the upcoming tournament.

Annette Obrestad is a phenomenal poker player who, at the age of 19, took down the first annual World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE), pocketing a cool million. With this victory, Obrestad became the youngest player to ever win the coveted Bracelet. Before her fateful WSOPE triumph, Annette gained fame among the online poker community, under her username ‘Annette_15′, for winning a poker tournament without once peaking at her hole cards.

Sorel Mizzi, at the ripe age of 21, has carved his name into the formidable list of ‘most feared opponents’ in the world of online poker. From his hometown of Toronto, Mizzi has earned himself more than $500,000 playing at the popular online poker room, PokerStars. Under his revered handle, ‘Imper1um’, Sorel Mizzi has taken down the PokerStars Sunday Warm-Up, worth $80k, along with a host of other fierce, multi-table tournaments.

Mental Health Issues Lead to Suicide Death of Brandi Hawbaker

April 27, 2008

Just ten days ago the poker world was shocked by the loss of one of it’s first real show stopping stars. Brandi Hawbaker had the magic that is required to make it to super stardom, that special personality that just draws you in. That same magic that Marilyn Monroe enraptured the world with during the Kennedy era.

The poker world loved to write about this vivacious young lady, who is quite well known for a photograph filled with fun personality in which she covered her breast with a Full Tilt Poker logo, and exposed a bit of shapely skin. Brandi Hawbaker was known for her passion for life, though that may not be the words used at the time.

From gourmet cooking, to her outspoken personality at the poker table, Brandi seemed to run at life full boar. Her first headlines according to poker blogger Ace High Pino were written following that spur of the moment flash of flesh during the Fest Al Lago main event, Brandi gave a photographer something interesting to take a picture of inside the walls of the Bellagio hotel and casino that day.

Though Brandi finished 35th in that event not first, a personal record for her, she stole the show, she owned the headlines, and she changed the path of her own life forever.

That began the dramatic, gossip and adventure filled professional poker career of one beautiful young Brandi Hawbaker. Her smile and her stories made their way through the online poker world like wildfire. Bloggers couldn’t get enough of her, poker forum enthusiasts debated every aspect of her life, both public and personal.

There’s those that say she was taken advantage of by some of the men that play this game we call poker, but live as life. There may be some truth to the term poker shark.. There are those that say she did her share of advantage taking. There are You Tube stories in evidence of both sides of this story.

According to family, Ms. Hawbaker also had a history of mental illness which some say accounted for her mental and physical outbursts, and maybe even for some of her passion for life, or at least the abandon in which she lived it. News reports referred to a severe mental disorder that was not treatable. According to reports and accusations from Brandi’s ex-boyfriend, Hawbaker may have also been involved in prostitution, and self medicating her illness with a cocaine and prescription drug addiction. A video recording making light of alleged theft and/or vandalism was released on You Tube.

During her early days on the poker scene it was alleged that the young poker star, who it may be mentioned only grossed 40k in recorded poker tournament winnings throughout her career, during a fight with her then boyfriend Mark Newhouse, allegedly locked herself in a bathroom, and cut her self.

The story was written, in addition to many other personal and demeaning stories, and many chalked it up to a young starlet looking for attention. What wasn’t seen as widely was a young woman, asking for, or in the very least needing serious mental evaluation.

Sunglasses, to Wear or Not To Wear?

April 22, 2008

Sometimes it’s good to have a great poker face, other times, perhaps it’s a bit unappropriated. There are even times, for instance, when the neighbors hot girlfriend comes for a visit, right before her burly boyfriend shows up, that having the best poker face can’t even keep you from getting a black eye. As you’ll see in the next 777.com video short however, a well practiced poker face is only beneficial at the poker table, if you refrain from pointing and laughing.

Additionally, in the more comical and quite a bit less graphic video, video authors shows us that sometimes, whether playing at home, or in public poker rooms. .. the ’sunglasses look’ can go a touch overboard, we just look like clowns. I say however, if it takes a gas mask to win the $3 million dollar guaranteed World Poker Crown, then you gotta do what you gotta do.

So just what is the World Poker Crown?

It’s the 888.coom version of the World Series, the big Pubah! It’s 888.com poker players shot at winning millions! All of the preliminary events will be held in the style of online poker tournaments until the final event, played by the final 8 players, the 888WPC is played live in a land based casino.

Those final 8 players will have a shot at poker superstardom after having been invited to play the final event, live on television from the Perlada Castle in Barcelona Spain.

The final event will take place between May 6th and May 10th. The total 888 prize package includes:

  • Your Seat in the Live Televised 888 WPC Event.
  • Airfair For Two
  • Welcome Party with all the Glitz a poker Star Is Entitled to
  • 3 nights accommodation in the beautiful 5 star Peralada Hotel

Step this way for a free World Series of Poker Seat.

Sisterly Trio Caught up in Bingo Lawsuit

April 21, 2008

It’s serious business in UK Bingo halls when bingo buddies, or in this case, bingo playing sisters don’t uphold their agreements to split all monies won during a game of bingo.

In fact, three sisters have found their way into a legal battle over a verbal contract involving online bingo winnings. Linda Kenny and sister Doreen Thomas have filed a lawsuit against their sister Edna Sexton. The two sisters claim Edna Sexton backed out of a verbal agreement to split bingo winnings three ways. The agreement was according to news reports made prior to Sextons winning National Game ticket which was won at Buckingham Bingo Palace, located in Hunts Cross, Liverpool in June of 2007.

The Sexton sister, says the other two sisters, Linda and Doreen are mistaken, there was a clause in the long standing agreement to handle incidents such as these: Wins of more than £1,000 were not split between the sisters.

If you think this is bingo drama, check out Maria Bingo’s chat-rooms. Inside not only can you play chat games with real live people. You can pit yourself against other bingo playing women, as they bond, bicker and compete. Where there’s women there’s men, and where there’s women and men, there’s jealousy, who needs soap operas anyway, check out Maria Bingo instead.

World Poker Tour Boycott Ends

April 21, 2008

Chris Ferguson, well known in the poker world for his black hat, long hair, and amazing knack for numbers, said today that he and other professional poker players are excited to participate once again in WPT events.

A tentative agreement has been made in the case that originally involved Andy Bloch, Annie Duke, Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson, Phil Gordon, Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem, and Howard Lederer vs. the World Poker Tour (WPT).

On July 19th 2006, the above seven poker players filed an antitrust complaint against WPT Enterprises, INC. (WPTE). In the lawsuit the plaintiffs claimed ‘treble and punitive damages’ for the WPTE’s alleged antitrust violations.

In short, they didn’t agree with the wording used in a document players of WPT events were made to sign before admittance into poker tournaments.

Spokespersons from the World Poker Tour said this week in a press release that the wording, that was said by the players to be in conflict with their endorsement deals, will be changed.

The new wording has not as of yet been released, however, Chris Ferguson was present and accounted for, battling it out for the WPT Championship being held at the Bellagio hotel and casino in Las Vegas Nevada.

According to the press release, the WPTE denies any wrongdoing, and any liability, however, in effort to settle differences with poker players, and refocus on the companies growth, rather than litigation, they are willing to make the change.

Founder and CEO of the WPT said “We are glad to put this dispute behind us, and we look forward to working with all players to grow the sport of poker.”

ePassporte No Longer an option for Online Poker Transfers in US

April 19, 2008

In recent days, news has been traveling online that the third party broker, ePassporte, is out of business in the United States. ePassporte was a way for online players to transfer money back and forth to their poker operator without breaking the rules of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. With the passing of this act players have found it extremely difficult to get money to their online operators and receive money since the UIGEA stops all money transactions from online gambling sites. A letter has been making its way around the online world that was written by ePassporte to online poker site Pitbull Poker. Gregory Elias from ePassporte states in the letter that Pitbull Poker’s account has been suspended and the agreement the Company had with ePassporte has been terminated. The letter goes on to state that they(ePassporte) does not believe that the transactions they receive and process are illegal but they are not going to take a chance with the US Government. Elias also says that the New York Office of the United States District Attorney is investigating the Company.

Having seen the letter myself this is pretty much all it says. The termination happened on Friday April 11th at 1:00 PM PDT and the letter was signed by the Managing Director, Gregory Elias, and the United International Trust, NV Managing Director. It is really unclear of why ePassporte quickly exited the US market. It could be because the “just” found out about the investigation but I do not believe this is true. The Company had been handling Netellers ex-customers for a while so they had to know eventually something would be coming their way.

It could be other reasons but with the recent testimonies made by people from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department as well as the Banking sector that claimed their was a lack of definition of the UIGEA not to mention the movement being made by Barney Frank and other representatives that would overturn the UIGEA. Hopefully this whole mess will be resolved soon and all types of money transfers will be available for United States players to play on any internet gambling site.

SSNN Reports: World Series to Feature STRIP POKER Event

April 19, 2008

According to SSNN strip poker is expected to be included  in the 2008 World Series of Poker schedule of events. World Poker Tour Causes Controversy with decision on WPT Ladies Championship

April 19, 2008

World Poker TourThe WPT Ladies tour will be ending in Las Vegas with the $1,500 championship event. The World Poker Tour chose the Susan G. Komen for the Cure as the charity to benefit from the Championship. However this year the WPT choose to take 15% of the prize money to use as the donation for the charity instead of gathering donations from the players. This decision has caused several players to withdraw from the event. Two of the strongest voices against the decision are Susie Isaacs and Lisa Adams. Susie is a former WSOP Ladies event winner and Lisa is the talk show host of Poker Talk America and an avid poker player. Both have stated that the event should be billed as a charity event and not a championship event since the amount donated is being withheld from the prize money. It has been stated that with the 15% being withheld for the donation another 3% will be withheld to pay for the tournament staff and another $25,500 withheld to give the winner of the tournament a seat to the WPT Championship. This is a very large amount to be withheld and the larger the player numbers the amount withheld will be larger.

Steve Lipscomb the World Poker Tour CEO was a guest on Poker Talk America this past week along with Susie Isaacs and stated that the WPT is trying to promote women in poker and a good cause. He also stated the WPT gives women what men don’t have: an exclusive event. Lipscomb also stated that the event had been opposed by shareholders and now with the ladies opposing the decision “no good deed goes unpunished.”

The WPT has stated the event will move forward as planned and next year they will reconsider the charity aspect of the Ladies Event. That is if the ladies have an event next year. This event will be the only championship to donate a portion of its prize pool to a designated charity.
