UltimateBet Investigation Confirms Unfair Play, Victims to Be Reimbursed

May 30, 2008

UltimateBet Online Poker RoomTokwiro Enterprises, parent company of the UltimateBet online poker room, has been conducting an investigation for the past three months in regards to accusations of ‘unfair play’, centered around the username “NioNio”. Yesterday, Tokwiro Enterprises released the findings of its explorative study, announcing that unfair play was in fact occurring at the UltimateBet online poker room.

According to the report released on UltimateBet.com, a number of accounts were gaining an unfair advantage by using an unauthorized software code that enabled them to view the hole cards of other players. Apparently, the perpetrators worked for the previous owners of UltimateBet, before the company was sold to Tokwiro Enterprises in October of 2006.

Tokwiro has stated that the company will take full responsibility for the misconduct, vowing to reimburse any player who suffered losses from the incident. It is also their main priority to “”permanently remove the ability to engage in unfair play” and to, “implement measures that prevents future incidents.”

Tokwiro asserted that the company had no prior knowledge of the existence of a ‘software code’ before February of 2008, one month after Tokwiro was alerted to the possibility of unfair play occurring. The investigation confirmed that the unauthorized software code was “part of a legacy auditing system”, manipulated by the alleged criminals.

The Kahnawake Gaming Commission, under which UltimateBet holds its gaming licensing, hired an independent auditing firm, Gaming Associates. The audit report revealed that the software code in question has been permanently removed from the system.

Tokwiro Enterprises issued a statement to all members of the UltimateBet online poker room:

We would like to thank our customers for their patience, loyalty and support, as well as for their understanding that we are doing everything we can to correct this situation. The staff and management of UltimateBet are fully committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our players, and we want to assure customers of our unwavering resolve to monitor site security with every resource at our disposal.

Poker Movie Deal Releases this Friday

    April 27, 2008

This Friday poker enthusiasts will get to see a new movie about poker that has already received rave reviews. The movie is based on an ex-gambler who teaches a college kid about playing cards. The two find themselves in the WSOP and the kid proves to be a match for the teacher. The movie stars Burt Reynolds, new comer Bret Harrison and Shannon Elizabeth.

Burt Reynolds is always a sight to see and Shannon Elizabeth will be making a more than anticipated comeback in her role. Bret Harrison has been in popular TV Shows playing the goofy next door neighbor in Grounded for Life and the devils clean-up guy in Reaper (one of my personal favorites). The movie also features several cameos by professional poker players Chris Moneymaker, Greg Raymer, Vince Van Patten, Phil Laak, Joe Hacehm and Antonio Esfandiari.

This will be the second movie released this year in the gambling genre. This past March the movie 21 was released and has grossed over $40 million in the short time it has been out in theatres. With moderate to good reviews this movie has done quite well. 21 was based on the true story of young college students from M.I.T. and how they went to Vegas and won big by counting cards. With the success of this movie and the big name actors and professional card players featured in Deal, poker players and movie lovers alike should enjoy the film. The film will be released to limited cities so movie goers should check with their local theatres for show times and dates.

Blackjack Movie ‘21′ Debuts - ‘Winner Winner Chicken Dinner?’

      March 29, 2008

250X250_USBased on “Bringing Down The House” By Ben Mezrich, 21 made its way into theaters across the United States today.

The latest in gambling movies, 21 opened today in the United States. 21 was based on a book about blackjack card counting written by Ben Mezrich, a nonfiction bestseller. In both the book and the movie, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) students utilized their above average math skills to win big at Las Vegas blackjack tables.

The basic plot of the film revolves around Ben Campbell, who is played by Jim Sturgess). Ben is your typical brainiac when it comes to numbers. He’s already attending MIT, and has been accepted to Harvard Medical. Unfortunately for Ben, he’s broke, he can’t afford tuition.

He is however one of 74 candidates competing for a scholarship. Problem: in this pool of people, amongst these 73 other competitors, Campbell is run of the mill. He’s nothing special, they’re all genius’s, they’ve all done great things.

After an intriguing discussion during a class, a professor, Mickey Rosa, played by Kevin Spacey invites Campbell to become a join in a campus club, so to speak. A small club of MIT card sharps, ie, blackjack card counters. Bonus, the group also includes the blonde Campbell has been drooling over for a few days now, apparently, her daddy was a blackjack player and she ‘grew up on blackjack’.

Throughout the course of a year, 17 visits to Las Vegas, 6 Million dollars is stripped from casinos, counting cards is legal, however, Las Vegas casinos are said to… ‘frown on it’.

Throughout the course of the movie, viewers saw a small glimpse of Las Vegas high roller glimpse. The attraction between the male and female lead was touched upon, though rather skimmed over. There was some mutiny, revenge, and other action type areas, and I did hide my face in my husbands shirt once. In general, the movie lacked attention to detail. It didn’t really ever suck you in.

What must it feel like to be 21, go home at the end of the day, and have won 40 thousand dollars? The first real loss, what does that do to a card counter? Throughout the movie, Campbell lives two lives, one in Nevada, as a high roller rich boy with fake ID. Another in Boston, as a college student, vying for a scholarship, with two geeky best friends, trying to win a science contest. What kinds of changes are made in his Boston Life?

I wouldn’t say that 21 was a bust, I wouldn’t call it memorable either. I am anxious however to buy the book ;).
