Poker After Dark: New Cash Game Airs on 10/13

October 11, 2008

NBC brings viewers another $200/$400 no-limit hold’em cash game with a minimum buy-in of $100,000

For those who enjoyed NBC’s Poker After Dark first ever cash game earlier this season, this week’s show should put a smile on their faces as six players with reputations for their cash game prowess face off in a $200/$400 no-limit hold’em game with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line. The first cash game was extremely well received by the viewing community, and this week’s action will see five familiar faces and one new one looking to increase their bankrolls at the expense of one another. Those competing are well-known pros Patrik Antonius, Howard Lederer, Doyle Brunson, Gabe Kaplan, Eli Elezra, and amateur player Dee Tiller.

All of the professional players, of course, are very experienced at playing poker for these stakes, and most have played against one another many times. The wildcard in the mix is Tiller, the self-proclaimed “Ten Pound Bass” who is a successful businessman from Texas but is no stranger to high stakes games, despite having played poker recreationally for only the past six years. He also brings a witty and down-home personality to the table that viewers are sure to enjoy.

Antonius is this week’s youngest player and is known for playing in the highest stakes cash games, especially online, where he has established a reputation as one of the best short-handed cash game players in the world. Elezra has played in the “Big Game” at Bellagio for many years, while Brunson, Lederer, and Kaplan have decades of experience between them playing at this level or even higher, and have amassed considerable wealth over the years by doing so.
The game will start with $200/$400 blinds and viewers can expect lots of straddles. Look for the players to agree to add an ante early in the session to increase the size of the pots. Players could buy in for a minimum of $100,000 and a maximum of $250,000, and any rebuys had to be at least $50,000. And as is customary on PAD, all of the players’ hole cards will be shown, even if they are mucked preflop, so that viewers can see what cards players don’t play as well as the ones they do.

Brief profiles on all six players appear below. The game will begin airing on NBC late night Monday at 2:05 a.m., October 13, and will continue for five consecutive nights in the same time slot. A special program called the “Director’s Cut” will air late night Saturday, October 18, at 1:00 a.m., right after Saturday Night Live. This show will feature Leeann Tweeden with a behind-the-scenes look at the week with highlights and insightful player interviews. Viewers can also watch the game at www.nbcsports/msnbc.com/poker.

    October 9, 2008

(MANILA, PHILIPPINES) – Having made its mark on Asia and players around the world with two highly successful poker events in 2008, the Asian Poker Tour (APT) has announced the first event for its 2009 tournament schedule.

APT Philippines 2009, the Manila leg of next year’s Tour, will be held at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel in Makati, Philippines, from January 27 to February 1, 2009. Buy-in is set at USD $2,500. Interested parties may contact their local or favorite online poker room for information on scheduled satellites.

This year’s APT Philippines event, held at the same venue last May, attracted 316 poker players from around the world – a number that the APT is looking to surpass at next year’s event. It featured a USD $1,000,000 guaranteed prize pool and had various attractions such as Asia’s first 13-card poker tournament. The main event was won by Australian poker pro David Saab, who walked away with the USD $280,000 top prize.

APT Philippines was followed by an even more successful APT Macau tournament, which was held in late August. The event featured an even bigger guaranteed prize pool of USD $1,500,000 and was won by U.S.-based Yevgeniy Timoshenko.

The Tour will feature at least four major events in 2009. Further announcements regarding this year and next year’s events will be made by the APT next week.

Chris Parker, CEO of the APT, said that the Tour has big plans and that he is looking forward to next year:

“The APT has already held two major events this year – APT Philippines and APT Macau. After consultation with players, online partners, and sponsors, a comprehensive schedule is now being planned for 2009 to successfully meet the needs of all concerned. We are looking forward to enhancing poker’s presence in Asia.”

Poker Affiliate Tournament in Barcelona Shut Down by Police

      September 28, 2008

A freeroll poker tournament offered to private members of a poker affiliate forum during an industry convention in Spain was shut down by local Police. Poker tables, and chips were confiscated from the event, set in Barcelona, reported NoSoloPoker on Friday.

Police raided the Hotel Princesa in Barcelona Spain where a private freeroll tournament was being held. This years ASOP brought together 42 online poker affiliates, each of whom earned their seats in the event though a series of  private (members only) online poker events sponsored by a variety of poker rooms online.

It’s common knowledge among poker affiliates, and most poker players even, that cash poker games aren’t allowed just anywhere, and in Barcelona, they’re only allowed in actual casinos. There was definitely an air of surprise afoot however as affiliates found out that a private members only free poker tournament would be shut down, and supplies confiscated. No arrests are reported, no charges filed at this time.

The tournament in question is the Affiliate Series of Poker, held during many Casino Affiliate Program events, and open to members of Poker Affiliate Programs, a web resource for online poker affiliates, affiliate managers, and others involved in the poker industry online.

This is not the first time an ASOP has been shut down during a CAP convention.

More than $10,000.00 in cold hard cash was to be won at this event, in addition to the coveted gold and diamond bracelet valued at nearly $15,000.00.

WSOPE Pre-Main Event: Brunson VS Obrestad In Heads-Up Poker

        September 25, 2008

On Friday, September 26, just one day before the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event in London, poker fans will have a chance to watch history in the making as the legendary Doyle Brunson will go heads-up against the 2007 WSOPE Champion, Annette Obrestad.

Pitting aged wisdom against quick-witted youth, the match between 75 year old Brunson and 20 year old Obrestad will certainly be one for the history books. The event will be a best-of-3, with the first player to win 2 matches crowned the victor.

DoyleTexas DollyBrunson is a living legend in the professional poker world, having made a monumentally successful career out of playing poker for more than 50 years now. Brunson has earned himself 10 WSOP Bracelets, only one behind the world record holder Phil Hellmuth, and tied for second with another legend of the game, Johnny Chan.

Endorser of the well established online poker room, Doyles Room, launched in 2004, Brunson’s professional poker exploits have earned him well over $5 million in live tournament winnings, and no telling how much in high stakes cash games.

AnnetteAnnette_15Obrestad hasn’t spent nearly as much time as a professional poker player, but has certainly proven her more than capable skills at the card tables. One day prior to her 19th birthday, Obrestad amazed the world by taking down the 2007 WSOP Europe Main Event in its inaugural season. Before that time, her online poker nickname “Annette_15” had already earned a reputation as one to be reckoned with.

At the mere age of 15, Obrestad began playing online poker as “Annette_15”, and claims she never once deposited money into an online poker account, rather building her own bankroll from scratch in Freeroll tournaments. In a six month period (Sept ’06-Feb ’07), Annette raked in more than $500k on PokerStars, $200k on UltimateBet and another $136k at Full Tilt Poker. Her live tournament winnings already exceed $2.5 million, nearly half of Brunson’s career live tournament earnings.

The Brunson-vs-Obrestad event will begin Friday at 1pm, local London time, at the Casino at the Empire in Leicester Square. Massive attendance records are expected, including spectators and media, having just been alerted to the upcoming live poker event yesterday via a press release from the WSOP.

Dublin wins Bluff Europe’s European Poker Capital of the Year Award

          September 3, 2008

Online Poker Press Release: (London, UK) - Dublin has been awarded the title of European Poker Capital 2008 by Bluff Europe Magazine. The Irish capital piped last year’s winner, London, to the post — with Vienna, Amsterdam and Barcelona named third, fourth and fifth places respectively. Bluff Europe praised Dublin’s lively and friendly poker scene, as well as the wealth of poker clubs and tournaments available to the poker playing public.

Dublin has a fine selection of card rooms and, poker is also growing steadily on a grassroots level in the city through poker societies and pub poker leagues. Each year exciting new tournaments spring up with buy-ins to suit all pockets. Dublin is also home to the Irish Open, the oldest and most revered tournament in Europe.

Last year’s contest saw Dublin come in a respectable second to London but this year the Irish capital was the city that most impressed the Bluff Europe panel. “Last year, in recognition of the inaugural WSOPE and the general health of its burgeoning poker scene, we chose London as the place to be. This induced a lot of snickering from across the Irish Sea, where they’re rightfully very protective of their fantastic poker scene,” said Philip Conneller, Editor of Bluff Europe. “But this year there was really only one candidate.”

“Gentleman” Liam Flood, who has been a stalwart of Irish poker since he helped introduce Hold’em to the Emerald Isle in the Seventies, was delighted with the news. “It’s because of the craic,” he explained, when asked him to describe what he felt was special about poker in Dublin. “There’s a sense of community. We find that a few drinks after the game helps you relax, too.”

All data compiled by editors at Bluff Europe - Europe’s leading poker magazine.
