A casino bill is in the works for 2017 in the state of South Carolina and reports say that Donald Trump taking the office of President of the United States has something to do with it. If passed, the casino revenues would help to fund road improvements throughout the state.
Wltx.com is reporting that Representative Todd Rutherford has already pre-filed a bill that would authorize casino gaming on the ballot of 2018. Voters would have the option to choose whether or not to amend the state constitution to allow gambling facilities of Las Vegas style in the state.
Playing the game of poker is completely illegal in the state of South Carolina as of right now so the proposal is certainly a good thing for poker fans. A ruling took place in 2012 by the Supreme Court of the state that made playing poker for any amount of money illegal in the state. That same year a justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court stated that the anti-poker game law is hopelessly outdated.
The plan created by Rutherford would allow for sports betting which is something that the federal government would have to change first before the state would be allowed to set up sportsbooks at casino gaming venues. In 2017, Congress is set to look at the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act from 1992 which would determine if sports wagering could take place in other states across the US.
In 2016, Rutherford had proposed legislation that was similar but it was unable to move forward. It seems that now with Trump about to take office, Rutherford feels that since he was a former casino owner in Atlantic City, Trump would be able to change the tide in the White House.
Rutherford stated in the past that Trump is well tied-in to gambling and that Republicans are now tied-in all the way to the top, so what is wrong with South Carolina benefiting from that tie-in to gambling profits?
The Representative feels that casino operators could set up along the coast of the state and offer gaming off the beach. Gaming could be in counties that want it and need it, able to benefit the entire state.
