Dominant Performance Leads Scott Blumstein to WSOP Main Event Victory

World Series of Poker

Once the final table for the 2017 Main Event was set, Scott Blumstein was set up to do well, holding a significant chip lead over the competition. Blumstein would dominate the final table, continuing to maintain the lead and almost earning the first-place win with a double knockout hand. In the end, the 25-year-old from New Jersey would earn his first WSOP gold bracelet after taking out Dan Ott in heads-up play.

The final table would play out over three days, beginning last Thursday. Blumstein would dominate the competition, ending up in three handed play with fellow poker pros Dan Ott and Benjamin Pollak on the final day of the event. At one point, it appeared Blumstein would win the event by knocking out both Ott and Pollack but his cards did not hold up during the 3-way hand. Ott ended up eliminating Pollack in third and 66 hands would then take place during heads-up play before Blumstein would earn the win.

Ott tried to make a comeback but it just wasn’t meant to be. On the final hand, it appeared as though Ott would be able to win a big hand with his A-8 up against Blumstein’s A-2 but a deuce on the river gave Blumstein the low pair and the win. Commenting after the win, Blumstein stated: “Is there a better way to win a main event than by hitting a three-outer on the river? A normally inconsequential card—the deuce—changes my life.”

The 2017 Main Event saw 7,221 players competing over a two-week time frame. This was the 48th edition of the event and with so many registered players, the tournament actually ended up seeing the third largest field in the history of the event. The total prize money on offer was $67,877,400 with first place earning $8.15 million.
