Las Vegas 2013 Summer Tournament Season Guide

wsopThe World Series of Poker is the best known of the summer poker tournament series in Las Vegas but there are many more that offer lower buyins to players.  There are seven tournament series that last from nine days to two months.  This does not include the long list of daily tournaments that will continue to run across the city this summer.

This is a list of the major summer poker tournament series in Las Vegas.  They are listed in the order that they start.

Orleans Open

The Orleans Open starts on May 18th.  There are a total of nine events.  There are six $225 events and three $330 events.  The Orleans Open consists of six No Limit Texas Hold’em tournaments, two Fixed Limit Omaha High/Low tournaments and one HORSE.  Players may receive hotel rooms for $35 on weeknights and $75 on weekends.  All events start at 2pm and the last event is May 26th.

Venetian Deep Stack

The Venetian Deep Stack is the longest running Las Vegas tournament series of the summer.  It runs from May 23rd to July 21st.  There are a total of 167 tournaments.  Start times are 11am, noon, 4pm and 7pm.  A wide variety of games are offered.  These include Seven Card Stud, Seven Card Stud High/Low, Omaha, Omaha High/Low, Razz and 2-7 Triple Draw.  Mixed games include HORSE, Omaha8/Stud8 and Triple Stud (Stud Hi, Razz and Stud High/Low).  Players may receive a $109 suite on weekdays.  These rooms are $169 on weekends.

Caesars Palace Mega Stack

Caesars Palace is offering its Mega Stack series between May 24th and July 14th.  Most events are No Limit Texas Hold’em, though there are a few non-hold’em games.  These include Pot Limit Omaha, Pot Limit Omaha High/Low, Omaha High/Low and Big O.  Most of these events have a buyin of $130, $240 or $350.  The main event is $1,080.

Binions Classic

The 7th Annual Binions Classic starts on May 25th.  The series runs through July 7th.  The former home of the World Series of Poker offers mostly No Limit Texas Hold’em events.  There are a few Omaha, Omaha High/Low and mixed games.  Buyins range from $160 to $1,000.  The $1,000 events are two day No Limit Texas Hold’em tournaments.  Most events have 40 minute levels and have buyins of either $160 or $200.  Most events start at 2pm.

World Series of Poker

The 44th World Series of Poker launches on May 29th.  The last day to buyin to the main event is July 8th.  The wide variety of games returns.  Pot Limit Omaha, Seven Card Stud, Razz, Seven Sard Stud High/Low, 2-7 Triple Draw, HORSE, 8-game mix and Omaha8/Stud8 are among the many games offered.  There are a total of 10 $1,000 events, though one of those events is a ladies tournament where men are forced to pay $10,000 to enter.  High buyin levels include $10,000, $25,000, $50,000 and $111,111.

Golden Nugget Grand Poker Series

The Grand Poker Series returns with a few changes.  The most noticeable change is that most of the $125 events are No Limit Texas Hold’em.  Most of the $230 events are non hold’em games, including Omaha, Stud, Seven Card Stud High/Low, HORSE and other mixed games.  The main event has a $1,080 buyin and will be held on July 3rd.  The Grand Poker Series starts on June 1st and ends on July 4th.  Most events start at noon.  Unfortunately, the atrocious rake still plagues this tournament series.  The $130 events carry a 28% rake so keep that in mind when deciding where to play.

Aria Classic

The Aria Classic starts on June 17th and runs through July 1st.  Buyins range from $150 to $340.  The main event has a $1,080 buyin.  In addition to No Limit Texas Hold’em, there will be Pot Limit Omaha, 2-7 Triple Draw and Open Faced Chinese Poker.  Some events will have bounties.

The most noticeable change in the schedules is the continued loss of stud games.  There are few Seven Card Stud games at all.  Razz and Seven Card Stud High/Low have all but disappeared from the smaller series.  They seem to be replaced by mixed games such as HORSE and Triple Stud.  The Binions poker room manager stated that stud games had not been drawing so they were dropped from the series unless they were in mixed games.  Unfortunately for stud players like me, it seems that this is a trend that will continue.
