Recently in Atlantic City, arrests were made at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa because bookies were taking sports bets from customers at the casino. The offending parties were arrested because sports betting is illegal in New Jersey. In fact it is sports betting is illegal in every state except four. Nevada is included in that four.
Since the arrests on November 14th, politicians and analysts have been talking about making sports betting legal in Atlantic City. In the arrests, 23 people were taken into custody including employees of the casino. Some were identified by law officials to be in the Philadelphia. The politicians and analysts believe if sports gambling was legalized it would keep the criminals from exploiting the market and keep them at bay.
The casino did nothing wrong in this case but the offending parities were using the poker room as a cover and a base for their operation. They were collecting and settling bets and laundering money among other things. Jeff Van Drew-Assemblyman, has been trying to help pass a bill that would legalize sports betting at the casinos. His stance is that the bill would help earn money for casinos and would end the monopolies held by criminals and mobs.
In the past two years the state has found two separate cases of illegal bookmaking operations at the Borgata. The other was run by a former NHL star and a state trooper. Van Drew is using both cases as examples to help pass the bill. New Jersey could have legalized sports gambling in 1992 but failed to do so in time. Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana met the deadline and can legally bet on sports.
The state now has to set its own law and then challenge a federal law. The state could then allow betting on sports events but not amateur ones. This will also cause a problem because the NBA and the NFL are opposed to legal wagering. The biggest draw for most people is that the crime world be disengaged from sports betting. It is believed that legalizing sports betting would do this if only to lessen the criminal activity.
